If you come across as anything other than a cheerful vibrant person who is full of life, energy and passion for graphic design you may be at a disadvantage. Part of the interview is personality and how well you will fit with the team. you let them know you recognize them as somebody significant if you expect them to wake up and recognize you as somebody significant. You should be customizing your application for each job and do your due diligence so you can ask them about past campaigns etc. Yes I totally made that number up, but the point is applying for jobs is your full time job until you land one. How many jobs have you applied for? Expectations for being hired in a competitive market aren’t warranted before you’ve applied for 200 positions. Is my job search experience normal, or am I possibly doing something very wrong?

My current plan is to keep improving my portfolio until it's so good that employers won't care about my years of experience, but I'm not even sure if this is doable considering I can't afford professional photography, fonts, and other visual assets. Additionally, I literally can't afford an unpaid internship because my family is very poor, and I don't know where I would get $6 for the daily commute. People have suggested that I lower my expectations and take any experience I can get, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect some compensation for the work I do - I'm not a slave.

One employer asked me to do an unpaid trial period, followed by a six-month unpaid internship can you believe this? If these internships are extremely educational and the companies make little money from having interns, then I can maybe understand a lack of compensation, but in most cases, the job responsibilities are undoubtedly indicative of mid-level work or higher. Regarding the internships I applied for, I actually received several job offers, but they were all unpaid, and I'm incredulous over this. But how do they expect me to get any experience if no one will give me a chance because I don't have enough experience? In several cases, the hiring managers encouraged me to contact them in the future after I get more experience. I've been brought it for interviews for several mid-level roles because the hiring managers liked my portfolio, but in the end, I keep hearing that they're moving forward with more experienced candidates. My interview invitation rate is around 10%, and oddly, I'm having the least success for junior/entry level positions. I'm focusing on applying for junior level roles, which I think is perfectly apt for me, though I'm also applying to internships and mid-level positions. I thought that with this positive experience, I would have no trouble finding a junior level graphic design role, but I've been searching for four months and have few leads. All of my clients were very pleased with my work and said they will use my services again in the future. I also have a bit of recent freelance experience. This positive experience is noted on my resume, and I have several references who would be happy to help me get a new job. After my internship period ended, I immediately got an offer for part-time work with higher pay, and I continued working for this company for one year. I soon found myself independently establishing branding guidelines and creating marketing assets and templates for long-term campaigns. My supervisors were impressed with my work and loved that I took initiative to make the templates look nicer and make the visual branding more consistent across the board, so they quickly gave me much greater responsibilities and more creative freedom. I started as an intern doing low-level work such as changing the text and images in templates. I worked for a little over a year during my time in college.
I have a 3.9 GPA and received several awards, and according to my professors, I have an excellent portfolio that showcases a solid understanding of design fundamentals. I'm a recent college graduate from New York City with a Bachelor's degree in graphic design.
